Bosnia’s Coach Barbarez Claims Unjust 1-4 Loss to Switzerland

Sergej Barbarez, the head coach of Bosnia and Herzegovina, expressed discontent following his team’s 1-4 defeat to Switzerland in their second Group B match at the World Cup. He believes the outcome was unfair, especially considering that his team performed better during the first 60 minutes of the game.

In their opening match, Switzerland drew 1-1 with Qatar, while Bosnia also played to a 1-1 draw against Canada. In the latest round, Bosnia suffered a heavy defeat against Switzerland, while Canada triumphed over Qatar with a score of 6-0.

The upcoming fixtures will see Bosnia face Qatar and Switzerland play against Canada on Wednesday, June 24, at 22:00.

Following the loss to Switzerland, Barbarez noted that his team managed to maintain hopes until nearly the last fifteen minutes of the match, thanks in part to stunning saves from goalkeeper Vasilj, despite Switzerland creating numerous chances.

From a scoreless tie in minute 73, the match concluded with five goals and a red card: “The score is too high and does not reflect the reality on the field. When you are a man down, it becomes extremely difficult to control things against a team like Switzerland, which has top players and exploits every space,” Barbarez stated.

Barbarez Believes His Team Outperformed Switzerland Early On

“The desire of the boys was immense. For 60 minutes, we played at a superb level and were much better than our opponents. Everything went wrong after the first goal, where we failed to clear the ball from our box, and shortly after that came the direct red card for Tarik Muharemovic. If I could turn back time, I would change exactly these two situations, as we lost our balance in the midfield,” the coach added, referring to his team’s upcoming encounter with Romania in the Nations League.

He also commented on the next match against Qatar, which could prove decisive for his team’s future in the tournament.

“This match is not our last chance; it is just a phase of the group stage, and we know how it works. We will do everything possible to analyze our mistakes, prepare as best as we can, and win the next match to advance from the group,” concluded Barbarez, as reported by sportal.bg.
