The US wants information on Iran's nuclear facilities through the International Atomic Energy Agency

The United States is lobbying other countries in the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to support a draft resolution that would order Iran to inform this body about the situation of its nuclear facilities bombed last year and this year by the US and Israel, as well as the enriched uranium stored there, reports Reuters on Sunday, taken over by Agerpres.

The text of the US-drafted resolution submitted to the 35-member council ahead of their quarterly meeting this week risks further complicating the ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran, as Iran is irritated by resolutions against it passed by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Although previous resolutions of the IAEA Board of Governors against Iran were passed with a clear majority, this time the proposed text could face increased resistance.

Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA after the 12-day war with Israel last June, when the United States bombed three of Iran's main uranium enrichment plants, repeated attacks this year in the US-Israeli war.

Iran must “provide the IAEA with accurate information on its stockpile of protected nuclear materials and facilities” and “grant the IAEA the full access requested to verify this information,” reads the text of the resolution consulted by Reuters, which also states that both measures must be implemented “without delay” and “are essential and urgent.”

However, the text does not require Iran to give explanations to the UN Security Council, an idea that, according to some diplomatic sources, was considered and would have come in the continuation of a resolution adopted by this council on June 12, 2025, in which Iran was accused of violating its non-proliferation obligations.

Iran's enriched uranium is one of the most difficult issues holding up a deal to end the war launched by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28, which has been suspended since April 8 by a ceasefire while negotiations brokered by Pakistan take place. US President Donald Trump is demanding that Iran simply hand over to the United States its stockpile of around 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium.
