Victor Negrescu calls for the acceleration of the European Maritime Security Hub: “Security is an immediate necessity”

The Vice-President of the European Parliament, the social democrat Victor Negrescu, launched a new appeal to the Romanian authorities and the European institutions to speed up the implementation of the European Maritime Security Hub in the Black Sea, in the context of the recent incidents with military drones in the vicinity of the EU and NATO borders.

He warns that such incidents highlight an increase in security risks in the region and the need for coordinated measures at the European level.

“The security of the Black Sea region is no longer a matter of the future, but an immediate necessity. The events of recent weeks have demonstrated that hybrid and military threats are real, recurring and directly affecting the communities on the eastern flank of the European Union,” Negrescu sent on Facebook.

The MEP claims to have constantly promoted this strategic project at the European level, through political initiatives, amendments and negotiations within the European Parliament, including in the EU budget process.

According to him, direct discussions also took place with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as well as with other European leaders, regarding the transformation of Constanta into a European coordination center for maritime security, the protection of critical infrastructure and the monitoring of threats in the Black Sea region.

Negrescu states that the European executive has already confirmed the feasibility of the project, and the European Parliament has included the initiative among its priorities, but he emphasizes that there is a need for a quick transition from the planning stage to implementation.

“Now is the time to move from discussion to implementation,” pointed out the vice-president of the European Parliament.

The Maritime Security Hub would strengthen monitoring and response capacity in the Black Sea area, support the protection of energy and transport infrastructure and improve coordination between EU member states and NATO partners.

“Romania has the opportunity to become the main European pillar of security in the Black Sea. This requires political will, institutional coordination and quick action. We can no longer afford to wait for the next incident to take the necessary measures. The safety of our citizens must be the absolute priority”, Victor Negrescu also transmitted.
