The head of EU diplomacy after the explosion of a maritime drone in Constanța: “The final responsibility rests with Russia”

European foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Friday that “ultimate responsibility” for the explosion of a Ukrainian maritime drone in the port of Constanta rests “directly with Russia”, although Ukraine has acknowledged that the drone belongs to it.

“The explosion of a drone in the port of Constanța proves that Russia's war is expanding more and more on the territory of the European Union (…) The final responsibility for what happened falls directly on Russia,” wrote Kaja Kallas on social networks on Friday, according to the EFE and Agerpres news agencies.

She also mentioned that she talked with Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu, whom she assured of “the EU's full solidarity with Romania”.

Kaja Kallas added that next week defense ministers from EU states will discuss how to further strengthen support for Ukraine and increase EU defense preparedness.

The Ukrainian Naval Forces confirmed, in a statement, that the maritime drone that exploded on Friday morning in the Constanța Civil Port was a Ukrainian drone that got out of control in the mission, following the jamming exerted by the Russian electronic warfare systems, so that the drone deviated from the trajectory and drifted towards the coast of Romania.

The communique also mentions that “the Ukrainian Navy provided the Romanian Navy with all the necessary information to prevent civilian casualties.”
