Sorana Cîrstea, sensational journey at Roland Garros 2026
No less than 17 years have passed since her previous presence in this phase on the Parisian clay, made in 2009, when Sorana was only 19 years old!
The Romanian started the match extremely determined, winning the first set without great emotions, score 6-3. Although she is in the last season of her career, Sorana is playing extraordinary tennis, handling the complicated moments well.
Cîrstea dictated the pace and led 5-2 in the second set, at which point the Chinese Wang risked everything and started a chasing race.
The Asian equalized and pushed the set into a tiebreak. There, Sorana's experience and self-control made the difference: she prevailed 7-4, closing the match in two sets after one hour and 57 minutes of play.
Thanks to this victory, Sorana equaled her career best performances at Grand Slam tournaments (quarters at Roland Garros 2009 and US Open 2023). The organizers from Paris will reward the Romanian with an impressive check of 470,000 euros.
In the next phase, for a place in the semifinals, Sorana Cîrstea will duel with the winner of the match between Mirra Andreeva (19 years old, 8 WTA) and Jil Teichmann (28 years old, 170 WTA).
