Watermelons and melons from Rostov, Volgograd and Astrakhan will rise in price this summer by at least 15%. The reason is abnormally hot weather and lack of rain.
This year there was no rain in the southern regions for four weeks. Early crops died from frost in early May, and now from the scorching sun. According to Mash, the sudden change in temperature reduced the 2024 harvest by 30%.
Part of the melon harvest will be replaced by supplies from Azerbaijan and Iran. The price for foreign fruits will be higher. According to experts, the average cost of watermelons and melons will rise by 15% at best, but a doubling in price cannot be ruled out.
In the first ten days of July, fruits that were grown under film will appear on the shelves. Those that grew in the field will arrive from the south only by August.
