Bruno Fernandes (31 years old), already named the player of the season in the Premier League, achieved an unrivaled record in the first division of England, being the first player to achieve 21 decisive assists in a season.
The Manchester United captain had equaled the record of 20 assists shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne in the previous leg when he bagged an assist in a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.
Bruno Fernandes, the first player to manage 21 assists in a Premier League season
Bruno Fernandes managed the assist number 21 in the last leg, away from Brighton, when he passed decisively to Patrick Dorgu, directly from the corner, in the 33rd minute of the match at the “Amex Stadium”.
The Portuguese's successful performance came just a day after he was officially named the Premier League Player of the Season after he managed 8 goals and 21 assists.
Thus, Bruno Fernandes became the first Manchester United player to win this trophy since Nemanja Vidic's success in the 2010-2011 season, which ended the Red Devils' 5-match winning streak.
The former Serbian central defender had won this trophy two seasons ago, and meanwhile Wayne Rooney was also making Premier League history by receiving this distinction. Previously, Cristiano Ronaldo had been named the best player in the Premier League for two seasons in a row.
Since the English championship received the name of the Premier League, in the 1994-1995 season, Manchester United gave the best player of the championship 9 times. In addition to those previously mentioned, the trophy was also brought to “Old Trafford” by Peter Schmeichel in 1996, by Dwight Yorke in 1999 and by Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2003.
