On World Embroidery Day, which this year is celebrated on May 21, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine submitted Ukrainian embroidery for inclusion in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This was reported on the department’s website on May 20.
The initiator was the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine, the Ministry of Culture noted. The expert council on intangible cultural heritage, scientific and cultural institutions, regional centers of folk art and public organizations also joined in the preparation of the nomination.
The nomination dossier “Vyshyvanka in Ukraine: a socio-cultural tradition” was signed by the Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy – Minister of Culture of Ukraine Tatyana Berezhnaya. After this, it was transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, which, together with the Permanent Delegation of Ukraine to UNESCO, sent the dossier for consideration by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Berezhnaya emphasized that the tradition of embroidery is one of the most widespread and “living” forms of intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine.
“Today embroidery is an important part of our lives. Therefore, it is so important that the world knows that it is ours and why it is so important to us,” she noted.
