The French energy giant is investing in Poland. A new energy storage facility has been launched

Energy storage is the technology of the future. They are of key importance in an energy system based on unstable renewable energy sources (RES). They collect surplus electricity produced and feed it into the grid when there is demand. The effect is, among others, stabilization of the power grid.
In Stare Grodków in the Opole region, EDF power solutions Polska, a daughter company of the tycoon on the Seine EDF, launched large-scale energy storage with a capacity of 50 MW (120 MWh). The warehouse was connected to the network of Tauron Dystrybucja.
The project consists of 24 container storage modules with accompanying power infrastructure, including a transformer station and connection to the 110 kV network.
Energy storage is key to the energy transition
— Energy storage is one of the most important elements of building a modern energy system in Poland. This is a very important element of Poland's energy transformation, emphasizes Minister of Energy Miłosz Motyka.
As he adds, investments, such as the one put into operation in Stare Grodków, increase the stability of the power grid. – Only PGE plans to build over 80 battery energy storage facilities with a total capacity of over 10,000 MWh, which will be located at existing power stations throughout Poland – announces Miłosz Motyka.
The minister is echoed by Alicja Chilińska-Zawadzka, head of EDF power solutions Polska: – Energy storage will play a key role in the energy transformation, increasing the flexibility and stability of the entire power system.
Chilińska-Zawadzka reports that the project is one of the largest installations of this type in the country. It obtained a 17-year contract in a capacity market auction organized by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne – the Polish transmission system operator.
The warehouse was connected to the Tauron network
The energy storage in Stare Grodków was connected to the distribution network operated by Tauron Dystrybucja. It is intended to support the flexibility of the power system and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources in the Polish energy mix.
— Energy storage is an essential element of a modern power system, and their development requires a stable and flexible network infrastructure, notes Leszek Kosiorek, president of Tauron Dystrybucja.
He estimates that the connection of the energy storage facility in Stare Grodków is an example of good cooperation between the investor and the distribution system operator and proof that the Tauron Dystrybucja network is prepared for the integration of new technologies.

As Alicja Chilińska-Zawadzka points out, launching the first EDF energy storage facility in Poland “is an important milestone” in the development of the company's operations on the Vistula River. The company is currently developing a portfolio of storage projects with a total capacity of 370 MW.
