A huge ruby, 11,000 carats, was found in Myanmar, one of the largest rubies ever found in this South-East Asian country renowned for its precious stones, the Burmese press announced on Friday, reports AFP, taken by News.ro.
This ruby, mined in the Mogok region (north), is “exceptionally large, rare and hard to find”, the new Burmese government announced in a statement.
“The giant ruby has a red-purple color with yellowish undertones and is considered to have a high color quality,” the Myanmar authorities announced.
Despite being much smaller than a similar 21,450-carat ruby found in the same area in 1996, this stone is much more valuable “because of its superior color, clarity and overall quality,” the government said, without estimating its value.
Emperors, kings and military commanders have long disputed the Mogok Valley, located in the Mandalay region, where the most remarkable rubies, called “pigeon's blood”, are hidden.
These precious stones are some of the most expensive in the world. The highest quality jewelry can reach several million dollars.
Myanmar is ruled by a military junta following a coup in 2021 that sparked a civil war. But former military leader Min Aung Hlaing recently became president, following a widely contested electoral process.
