Bankruptcy – First US airline to go out of business in nearly 25 years

The bankrupt US ultra-low-cost airline Spirit Airlines has stopped all flights.
Spirit operates scheduled flights to the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America. In 2023, Spirit was the seventh-largest passenger carrier in North America, as well as the largest ultra-low-cost carrier in North America.
In April 2010, Spirit Airlines became the first US airline to charge passengers for carry-on bags. It is the first US airline to go out of business in nearly 25 years.
“We are proud of the impact our ultra-low fare model has had on the industry over the past 34 years and look forward to serving our customers for many years to come. It is with great disappointment that we announce that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines has begun an orderly cessation of operations, effective immediately.”
