Ukraine has begun raising funds to restore the damaged confinement at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. How much do you need?

On April 26, during the International Chernobyl Conference on Reconstruction and Nuclear Safety, Ukraine began raising funds to restore the New Safe Confinement at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, damaged by a Russian drone strike in February 2025. This was announced by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denis Shmygal in his Telegram channel.

According to preliminary estimates, approximately €500 million will be required to repair and additionally strengthen the New Safe Confinement – a protective shelter over the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant – approximately €500 million, Shmygal writes.

Ukraine should receive the first €30 million under an agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which was signed during the conference. These funds are planned to be used to assess the damage and develop solutions and design necessary to begin work and pre-purchase equipment.

“The partners have also made their first commitments in the amount of almost €100 million. These funds will be used to restore safe confinement at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and improve nuclear safety in Ukraine,” the Minister of Energy noted.

After the conference, 24 countries joined a joint statement in support of raising funds to restore the shelter.
