An armed attack took place at the Teotihuacán archaeological site in Mexico on Monday, killing one woman and injuring at least six others, Mexican security authorities said, CNN reports.

According to preliminary information, a man opened fire in the area of the popular tourist attraction, located approximately 50 kilometers from the capital Mexico City, near the Pyramid of the Moon. The attacker killed a Canadian tourist before killing himself, officials said on platform X.
Law enforcement recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon and ammunition from the scene. Authorities in the state of Mexico confirmed that six people were injured – four by gunshots and two by panic-induced falls.
Among the injured are two Colombian citizens, a Canadian and a Russian. They are receiving medical attention, and the authorities have stated that the situation is now under control.
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, sent a message of solidarity to the victims and their families, announcing that federal, state and local institutions are collaborating to manage the incident. The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said that the Mexican authorities are in contact with the embassies of the countries whose citizens were injured.
The incident comes amid increased attention on security in Mexico amid preparations for an expected influx of tourists for the World Cup this summer.
Teotihuacán, a UNESCO site and one of Mexico's most visited tourist attractions, is home to the famous Pyramids of the Sun and Moon and attracts millions of visitors from around the world every year.
