They are quietly accelerating work on military plans regarding a potential Pentagon operation in Cuba, in case US President Donald Trump orders intervention in that country, USA Today reported on Wednesday, citing two sources.

Even though the attention of Donald Trump's administration is focused on the war with Iran, tensions between Washington and Havana have escalated in recent weeks, the newspaper emphasized.
Trump announced that he expects to soon have the “honor of taking over Cuba in some form.” He suggested that Cuba would “be next” after Iran and that the communist regime ruling Cuba would collapse. These statements are accompanied by a naval blockade of the island, although the US authorities have recently allowed deliveries of Russian crude oil via Russian tankers.
In an interview with Newsweek, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel announced that his country would resist if the US launched a military attack on the island.
The US and Cuba said they are looking for a way out of the crisis, but it is unclear to what extent both sides are ready to compromise, noted the USA Today daily.
