Peter Magyar on the EU loan to Ukraine. The winner of the Hungarian elections speaks clearly

Peter Magyar said that he would not stand in the way of Ukraine receiving a EUR 90 billion loan from the EU. The leader of the winning party, Tisza, stated at a press conference on Monday that Hungary would maintain the opt-out clause from financial participation in the loan, but would allow other EU members to take further steps, Bloomberg reports.
Brussels wants to quickly disburse the loan after Viktor Orban's devastating defeat in Sunday's elections, which ended his 16-year rule.

The EU is waiting for Hungary's decision
Cyprus, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU and sets many political priorities, will raise the issue at a meeting of EU ambassadors as soon as possible, according to a Cypriot official quoted by Bloomberg.
The decision to grant Ukraine a loan of EUR 90 billion was made in December 2025, and the funds are to be transferred in 2026-2027.
Victor Orban blocked money for Ukraine
In December, Orban agreed to the loan, provided that his country would be completely exempt from joint borrowing (it would use the opt-out clause).
Then, Budapest, accusing Kiev of deliberately blocking the transmission of crude oil after damaging the Druzhba pipeline in January, announced that it would not support any decisions favorable to Ukraine. “No oil, no money” — Orban said then.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban openly declared his position, which caused tensions in relations between Ukraine and Hungary. As a result of the attack on the pipeline, the transit of Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia was suspended, which further aggravated the situation.
“It was Prime Minister Orban who blocked a EUR 90 billion loan for Ukraine. Due to the complicated US policy towards Ukraine, this loan may determine the fate of this war and the security of our region, especially Poland,” said Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Loan to Ukraine
The loan for Ukraine will be taken out by the European Commission on the capital markets, and its repayment will be secured by the European Union budget.
According to the arrangements, Ukraine will repay its liabilities after receiving war reparations from Russia. Until then, Russian assets will remain frozen, which was confirmed at the EU summit.
