The first political leader in Romania to welcome the results of the Hungarian elections: “Hungarians have taken their democracy back”

Dominic Fritz, leader of the USR and mayor of Timisoara, says that “Hungary voted today for a historic change”, after the appearance of partial official results confirming that the Tisza opposition party, led by Péter Magyar, defeated Fidesz, the party of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has been in charge of the country for 16 years.
“Hungary is Europe. Almost 80% voter turnout says it all. Hungarians have taken their democracy back,” wrote Dominic Fritz in a Facebook post.
“According to the first results, Hungary voted today for a historic change. After 16 years of Viktor Orbán, the Hungarians chose to return their country to Europe, from which he distanced it. They chose hope instead of fear of enemies created by Russian-type propaganda”, continues the USR leader.
“As the mayor of Timișoara, a city built for centuries by Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, Serbs, together, I can only welcome this moment. Because it confirms what many of us already know: there is no contradiction between loving your country and your nation and wanting a strong Europe,” the politician added.
“I want to say one thing from the bottom of my heart to my Hungarian friends in Romania. What is happening today in Budapest is a victory for every Hungarian who wants a democratic, prosperous and European Hungary. What supports and defends us all is our common home, Europe. Congratulations, Hungary. Welcome back home,” Dominic Fritz added.
After Fritz, USR ministers Diana Buzoianu (Environment) and Radu Miruţă (Defense), as well as independent MEP Nicu Ştefănuţă, also sent congratulatory messages for the vote cast by Hungarian citizens on Sunday.
Péter Magyar's party wins the elections in Hungary. Viktor Orban publicly accepts his defeat
“Prime Minister Viktor Orbán congratulated us on the victory on the phone,” Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar announced on Facebook on Sunday evening.
His message came after the emergence of partial official results that appear to confirm the victory of his party, after 16 years of rule by Viktor Orbán.
The projection after processing more than 53% of the votes shows that Tisza will have 136 seats out of 199. Fidesz would collect 56 seats.
Hungarian citizens voted in impressive numbers: the data indicated a record turnout – more than 77.8% of voters had voted by 6:30 p.m. (half an hour before the polls closed) – the highest turnout since 1990.
