Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri brought a double victory for McLaren in the Sprint race from the Grand Formula 1 prize in Miami. The competition proved to be much shorter than expected, but offered strong emotions to the fans.
At the beginning, all the pilots left with intermediate tires because of the wet track from the rain that had stopped shortly before.
Piastri started in front of Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) and occupied the interior trajectory in the first turn. Antonelli went outside the track in a situation similar to the one in Jeddah between Piastri and Max Verstappen, according to Sportal.bg.
However, unlike Verstappen, Antonelli returned to the runway only 4th, being surpassed by Piastri, Norris and Max Verstappen.
Norris and Piastri, a new battle at the bayonet!
Until the middle of the race, the track was dry, and Norris managed to approach the Oscar less than a second. The best choice for the last tires would have been the slicks.
The first to stop at the speakers was Yuki Tsunoda, from the last position, returning on the track with medium tires. In the next round, number 13, Lewis Hamilton also stopped for soft tires, returning to 16th.
From the first sector, Hamilton was 2 seconds faster than the leaders and started to climb the ranking quickly.
McLaren called on the leader of the pans in the speakers in the 14th round for medium tires. In the same tour, Hamilton arrived on Verstappen, exceeded and climbed the third place.
Verstappen, penalized
Upon stopping Max's speakers, he returned to the box line exactly when Kimi Antonelli was there. The two collided, Max's front wing fell on the left side, and Antonelli failed to stop in the speakers and returned to the track.
Norris remained on the track with intermediate tires and, as last year, was saved by the safety car, which was requested after an incident in the 15th round. Liam Lawson and Fernando Alonso collided at the entrance to turn 12, the Spanish turned and stuck to the parapet.
Norris was already at the speakers and, when she returned to the track, she managed to rank first behind the safety car, a few meters in front of Piastri, and the third place remained for Hamilton.
The safety car drove the platoon to the last turn before the end, and then the pilots finished in this order. Immediately, F1 officials titled the site: “Norris wins the chaotic sprint from Miami after the Safety-Car and multiple incidents.”
Max Verstappen finished in 4th place, but due to a 10 -second penalty, the world champion was ranked last, on the 17th place.
