According to the South Sudanese authorities, the attack took place last weekend in the Khor Kaltan region, located approximately 70 km south of the capital of the country – Juba. “The investigation will determine the identity and motives of the attackers,” said James Wani Igga, vice president of Sudan, as quoted by AFP.

The death toll may be higher as local security forces continue to identify those killed.

South Sudan declared independence in 2011. Since then, there has been an ethnic civil war in the country between representatives of various tribes inhabiting the territory. The situation is made worse by droughts and famines.

Relations with neighboring Sudan also remain tense: in 2011-12 there was a war between both countries, which ended thanks to the mediation of the African Union. (PAP)
