Scientists have discovered a giant ocean beneath the surface of Mars
American geophysicists from the University of California have discovered a giant ocean hidden deep under the surface of Mars.
The huge reservoir was discovered using seismic data obtained by NASA's InSight Lander. Examination of the deeper crust revealed that it likely consists of patches of crushed igneous rock containing more than enough liquid water to fill the Martian oceans, covering the entire planet in a layer 1–2 kilometers thick.
However, it is difficult to access these water reserves due to their great depth – from 11.5 to 20 kilometers. Additional equipment, including drilling rigs, will be needed to confirm the presence of water and search for potential signs of microbial life, the scientists noted.
