High fuel margins under the government's microscope. Will there be a new tax?

“Reducing VAT on fuels is one of the solutions that we are now analyzing in great detail. I think it is a likely solution,” Domański said.
“For us, it is very important that the VAT reduction translates into a lower price of gasoline for drivers, and is not consumed by suppliers, distributors or gas stations,” he added.
He noted that the government had not yet made any binding decisions on fuel prices.

Will there be a tax on excess profits?
The reason for considering the tax on excess profits is the exceptionally high refining margins recorded by the fuel industry both in Poland and throughout Europe.
– We are currently not working on a tax on excess profits, for example in the case of fuel companies – noted Domański. He added that decisions on this matter have not been made yet, but it cannot be ruled out that such a possibility will arise in the future. The minister emphasized that the possible introduction of a new tax could be justified if the analysis shows that some companies achieve exceptionally high profits for market reasons.
– If the analysis shows that some companies have high profits for market reasons, the introduction of such a tax cannot be ruled out – said Domański. He also added that currently margins in the refining sector are reaching record levels, which is visible not only in Poland, but also in other European countries.
The situation on the fuel market arouses more and more emotions, especially in the context of rising prices of raw materials and their impact on the economies of European countries. The introduction of a tax on excess profits, although currently only under consideration, could become one of the tools to counteract the effects of the energy crisis.
