Delayed by the conflict in the Middle East
Trump was originally scheduled to visit China earlier, but he decided to stay in Washington and focus on the war with Iran. This conflict has become a new source of tension in US-China relations, especially since Iran is an important trading partner of Beijing and one of the main suppliers of oil.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said the decision to postpone the meeting was agreed with the Chinese side. She also added that The U.S. administration “has always assumed a period of about four to six weeks” for the conflict to lastalthough she avoided answering the question whether its completion was a condition for setting a new date for the summit.

Important conversations about trade and Taiwan
As Bloomberg writes, the upcoming summit will be a test for both leaders on trade issuespolicy towards Taiwan and the potential consequences of American actions towards Iran, which led to an increase in oil prices.
In March, representatives from both countries — including U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent — met in Paris, setting the stage for the leaders' talks.
Both sides declare their willingness to stabilize relations after the trade tensions of 2025 mutual tariff increases sparked fears of a global economic slowdown. One of the solutions being considered is the establishment of a special dispute resolution mechanism, known as the “US-China Board of Trade”.
