A unique operation was performed on a 29-year-old man with epilepsy at the Krasnoyarsk Regional Clinical Hospital. He suffered for many years from frequent attacks that were not responsive to medication. Doctors found the focus of the disease in the left temporal lobe – where the speech centers are located.
In order not to deprive the patient of the ability to speak, neurosurgeons used the “awake craniotomy” technique. A craniotomy was performed under anesthesia, and then the patient was awakened. Using electrodes on the cerebral cortex, speech zones were identified and the affected area began to be removed.

During the operation, the man was asked to read aloud. He chose an excerpt from Pushkin's Eugene Onegin. Clear speech and correct pronunciation served as a signal to surgeons that they were not touching important areas. As a result, the epilepsy focus was completely removed, but speech functions were preserved.
After the operation, the attacks stopped. The patient has already been discharged. After a year, doctors will evaluate how durable the result was.
