An incident of extreme violence took place in Lithuania, where Chinonso Jeremiah Obi, a player of the FK Dainava team, was attacked with a knife and an ax right in front of his home.

The attack happened on Tuesday in the city of Alytus, just a few hours before the team left for a championship game. The 20-year-old footballer was found seriously injured, next to a bloody knife. According to local media reports, he suffered six or seven stab wounds, and the attacker was allegedly armed with an axe.

The player underwent emergency surgery

Chinonso Jeremiah Obi was rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery. The doctors announced that, despite the serious injuries, his life is not in danger. The most serious injuries are to the hand, but the player also has injuries to his back, legs and internal organs. He is to be transferred to Kaunas for further treatment.

According to thecable.ng, the attacker, a young man born in 2007, was quickly apprehended by the police. The case is also being investigated from the perspective of a possible racist act, as reported by the Lithuanian Football Federation.

Harsh reaction from the federation: “Exceeds all limits of humanity”

The president of the federation, Edgaras Stankevicius, strongly condemned the incident:

What happened at Alytus goes beyond all limits of humanity. The person attacked is not just a player, but a young man who came to Lithuania to pursue his career, represent his team and contribute to its success. It is extremely unfortunate that there are still individuals capable of such behavior, especially in broad daylight.

Racism has no place in football or in society. Every player, regardless of nationality, skin color or background, should feel safe and able to do what they do best, inspire fans on the pitch. Football should unite, not divide.

– it is stated in the press release of the Federation
