Gdańsk is the sixth port in Europe
Among the EU ports, Gdańsk currently ranks 6th, behind Rotterdam, Antwerp-Bruges, Hamburg, Algeciras and Haropa. The promotion is driven by increases in key transshipment segments. The largest share is held by liquid fuels – 39.6 million tons (an increase of 0.4%) – and general cargo, the transshipment of which increased to 27.2 million tons (+16.6%). Container transshipment grew particularly dynamically, increasing by 23%. to the level of nearly 2.8 million TEU.
Dorota Pić, President of the Port of Gdansk Authority, emphasized that the result achieved is particularly important in the context of uneven development of the port market in Europe. As she noted, ports with stable infrastructure and high operational flexibility are able to use their potential even in difficult market conditions. The port management also announces the continuation of investments, financed, among others, by: from the funds generated, into port and access infrastructure
Rotterdam comes first
The port of Rotterdam remains at the top of the European ranking, handling 428.4 million tons of cargo in 2025, although this means a decrease compared to the previous year. Antwerp-Bruges retained second place with a result of 266.35 million tons (a decrease of 4.03%). The top five also included the Russian ports of Novorossiysk (168 million tons, an increase of 1.94 percent) and Ust-Luga (130.5 million tons, a decrease of 3.33 percent), as well as Hamburg, which ended the year with a result of 114.61 million tons and an increase of more than 2 percent.
The comparison shows the different dynamics in European ports. Some of them – including Gdańsk, Hamburg and French ports – are increasing transhipments despite the difficult market environment, while others, such as Antwerp-Bruges, Ust-Luga and Algeciras, are recording declines. The biggest decline was recorded by the port of Constanta, which dropped from 10th to 13th place in the ranking.
