Russia has declared the great-granddaughter of Nikita Khrushchev, the former leader of the USSR, a “foreign agent”

The Russian Ministry of Justice on Friday declared Nina Khrushchev, professor at an American university and great-granddaughter of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, a “foreign agent”, reports EFE, taken over by Agerpres.

According to an official press release from the ministry, Nina Khrushchev would have disseminated false information about the actions of the Russian authorities, spoken out against the “special military operation” in Ukraine (as the Kremlin calls the war started in 2022 in the neighboring country) and collaborated with other “foreign agents”, participating in the creation of their informative materials.

Khrushcheva, born in Moscow two weeks after her great-grandfather left power in October 1964, harshly criticized Russia's war in Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A resident of the USA since 1991, the year of the disintegration of the Soviet Union, she is currently a professor of international relations at a university in New York.

In 2024, she published in Russian the volume “Nikita Khrushchev. A leader outside the system”, referring to her great-grandfather who initiated the political thaw both in the country and in the relationship with the West, and denounced the personality cult of his predecessor, Joseph Stalin.

Khrushchev, who held the position of General Secretary of the USSR from Stalin's death in 1953 until his removal from power in 1964, is accused by ultranationalists of having illegally ceded the Crimean Peninsula to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, as Ukraine was called at the time, in 1954.
