Proposed talks in Cyprus fell through because the Lebanese authorities first demanded a cease-fire, while the Israeli government wanted to hold a meeting to discuss the possibility of a ceasefire, the sources said.
The exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah began last week when the Lebanon-based, Iran-sponsored organization attacked Israel in retaliation for the death of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He died on February 28 in Israeli-American bombings.
