Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz to world trade and is now exporting its own crude oil from the key terminal on Khark Island, despite air strikes by the United States and Israel for a second week.

According to Bloomberg, this was confirmed by satellite photos taken last Saturday by the European Copernicus system. They show the loading of crude oil at this terminal, located at the small coral island of Khark into two huge tankers, each capable of carrying up to 2 million barrels of oil.

This terminal serves as many as 90 percent. exports of Iranian crude oil, fueling a significant part of Iran's economy, which is crucial to financing its defense capabilities because it allows it to buy weapons from its allies – Russia and China.

The island, which is strategic for Iran, may soon become the target of an attack by the United States, as White House adviser Jarrod Agen suggested on Saturday in an interview with Fox Business.

But analysts say any attempt to seize it would require a ground troops operation, which the U.S. apparently does not want to test. And although the occupation of the island would paralyze the Iranian economy, it would also cause further sharp increases in oil prices, according to CNBC.

Iran fuels its economy not only by selling oil. While the US and Israel are attacking its western areas along the Persian Gulf, Tehran continues to trade with Afghanistan in the east.

“An average of 600 trucks a day pass from Afghanistan to Iran, and about 700 trucks enter Afghanistan from Iran every day,” Mawlawi Mohammad Jusuf Saedi, spokesman for the governor of Herat, told the Afghan Bahtar news agency.

According to official statistics published by Tehran, the current trade exchange between Afghanistan and Iran is estimated at approximately USD 4 billion per year, and a significant part of it passes through the border in Herat province.

Since Saturday, February 28, Israel and the United States have been conducting attacks on selected military targets in Iran as part of a joint campaign codenamed “Roaring Lion” by Israel and “Epic Fury” by the United States. In response, Tehran launches retaliatory attacks under the codename “True Promise IV”. (PAP)
