“We will continue to do this over the next few days,” said Țoiu, after the Foreign Affairs Council meeting convened by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The minister stressed that the situation remains extremely tense, with rocket fire continuing throughout the night as well as during the day.

However, Țoiu specified: “Romanian citizens are safe. Countries in the region have managed to defend their airspace. All Romanian citizens are, according to the information we have, in accommodation and safe”.

The minister also explained that, although it is difficult to anticipate the duration and intensity of hostilities, Romania prioritizes the personal safety of its citizens and respects the recommendations of local authorities.

“The recommendation is to prioritize personal safety and caution in land travel to border crossing points,” he stated Ţoiu.

In parallel, the Romanian authorities are preparing evacuation plans together with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, President Nicușor Dan and the ministries involved.

“We will present evacuation plans later when the airspace is deemed safe,” Toiu added. “Our expectation is that it will remain a situation of heightened insecurity. We have no certainty that this conflict will end immediately. Our stake is to contribute to the de-escalation of the conflict”.

An important lever in future negotiations is the European Union's sanctions package against Iran, which can be used both to increase pressure and to urge de-escalation. “We strongly condemn Iran's attacks in the region and want to contribute, in international formats, to de-escalation”emphasized Oana Țoiu.
