The tradition of Marțișor on March 1
The marigold, a jewelry object attached to a white and red cord that is offered to loved ones on March 1, has received various meanings over time – from the harbinger of spring to a symbol of the rebirth of nature. Since 2017, the tradition is included in the UNESCO heritage list.
The origins of the Martisor celebration are not exactly known, but it is believed that it appeared during the Roman Empire, when the New Year was celebrated on the first day of spring, in the month of Mars. He was not only the god of war, but also of fertility and vegetation. This duality is noted in the colors of the martisor, white meaning peace and red – war.
In general, women and girls receive marigolds and wear them during the month of March, as a sign of the arrival of spring. In Moldova, however, the custom is for girls to give gifts to boys.
