Iran's Revolutionary Guards reacted to Khamenei's death, saying “we have lost a great leader and we mourn him,” according to a statement carried by the Fars news agency, as quoted by Al Jazeera.
It added that Khamenei's “martyrdom at the hands of the cruelest terrorists and executioners of humanity is a sign of the legitimacy of this great leader and the acceptance of his sincere services.”
The message added that “the hand of revenge of the Iranian nation… will not let them escape.”
The Garda will remain “resolute in confronting internal and external conspiracies”, the statement said.
Several Iranian state media confirm the death of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, writes CNN.
“Iran's supreme leader has reached martyrdom,” public broadcaster IRIB reported Sunday morning.
The announcement comes after the US and Israel said Khamenei was killed in a series of joint attacks on the nation by the two countries.
Aged 86, Khamenei had ruled Iran since 1989.
