The use of Kylian Mbappe (27 years old) in the second leg with Benfica (Wednesday, February 25), in the play-off of the Champions League, is under question. Real Madrid's French forward continues to struggle with pain in his left knee, even having to leave training earlier on Tuesday.

Although Arbeloa has expressed his intention to have Mbappe available for the decisive match on Wednesday, the French media mention that the footballer would need a few days of rest.

Real Madrid leave with a 1-0 advantage after the first leg. Before the match, Arbeloa praised the sacrifice made by his student.

Alvaro Arbeloa: “Kylian Mbappe is ready to play on Wednesday and that's the most important thing”

“Kylian is ready to play on Wednesday and that's the most important thing,” the coach said. “I would like to emphasize the dedication he has shown to his teammates, the coach, the club and the supporters. It is important to appreciate his immense effort. I am sure we will need him and he will have a big game,” he added.

The French international's injury dates back to December 7, after a match with Celta de Vigo. The medical check revealed an injury to the external lateral ligament of the left knee, which would have required at least three weeks of rest.

However, Mbappe was back on the pitch in just eleven days, pressed by then manager Xabi Alonso, for the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona.

Regardless of whether or not he plays against Benfica, the France captain is expected to be sidelined in the coming days, missing the league games against Getafe and Celta de Vigo (March 7).

Managing his fitness is crucial, especially with the World Championship in mind, which the player considers an absolute priority.

It remains to be seen whether the Galacticos will choose to use Mbappe in the last 16 of the League, should they get there.
