Conviction for spying for Russia. A Latvian passed information to the GRU

A court in Latvia sentenced a man to six years in prison for spying for the benefit of Russia, the national media informs on Friday, according to Agerpres.
The Latvian citizen was found guilty of passing information to the Russian Military Intelligence Service (GRU). According to the Latvian news agency LETA, this verdict was reached following an agreement between the court and the defendant.
The man, who was arrested in August 2025, is said to have acted for ideological reasons.
The construction manager illegally collected information about the locations of Latvian military facilities, infrastructure and NATO troops stationed in the Baltic republic, according to information received by the court.
Communication with the GRU service would have taken place through a Telegram channel.
Latvia, an EU and NATO member state, borders Russia and its ally Belarus to the east.
