Lazio have taken a decisive step to leave Rome's Stadio Olimpico and build their own home. The Italian club has submitted full documentation for the redevelopment of Stadio Flaminio, an abandoned arena since 2011, in a project valued at around €445 million.
The announcement was made by the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, who confirmed the receipt of the official proposal from the club.
Lazio's new stadium will have 50,000 seats

“We can also give you another piece of news: just today, Lazio submitted the complete documentation to start the procedure for the construction of the new stadium, which will now have to be examined. It is an important step,” said Gualtieri.
The mayor described the proposal as “a superb project, which will have to be analyzed in detail”, showing satisfaction with the start of the administrative process. However, the submission of documentation does not mean the immediate start of work.
The plan calls for an increase in the capacity of the stadium from 24,000 to 50,000 spectators. As the arena is heritage-listed, the existing stands will be retained but elevated by a steel structure, which will increase the height from 17 to 40 metres. The project also includes the revitalization of the entire area.
To finance the work, the club will make a loan of 288 million euros, repayable over 30 years, complemented by an own investment of 87 million euros and a public incentive of 25 million euros.
The Flaminio Stadium, which has hosted major rugby competitions in the past, has been unused for more than a decade. With this project, Lazio is preparing to end sharing the Olympic Stadium with its rival, Roma. The construction of the new arena is estimated to take three years from the start of work.
