The Moscow Zoo told how the polar bear, which was brought from the Krasnoyarsk Territory, is adapting.

The female was brought to the Center for the Reproduction of Rare Animal Species of the Moscow Zoo on January 21. She was placed away from excursion routes to give her complete peace. There are two enclosures with dens and swimming pools on the territory.

“The she-bear has a good appetite. Her diet now includes mackerel, pink salmon, beef, chicken, zucchini, cabbage, carrots, apples and cottage cheese – she eats all of this willingly. Also, as a natural enrichment of the environment, hay, wood shavings and spruce branches are laid in the den, which stimulate the bear’s interest in exploring a new habitat,” said Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.

The zoo notes that her health condition is satisfactory. She will undergo a detailed medical examination in the spring. While the animal reacts warily to employees and masters the territory when there are no people nearby.

Rescue of the bear

Let us remind you that in early January, a bear came to the village of Nosok in Taimyr and attacked a family of fishermen. The predator was scared away, and the working group of Rosprirodnadzor decided to catch it. Experts noted that the bear went to a populated area, which is located almost 400 km from the coast, far beyond its habitat.

Employees of the Moscow Zoo took part in the capture operation. They searched for the animal using a helicopter in polar night conditions. Due to the need to use a transport cage, the helicopter did not include additional fuel tanks. Therefore, the team had only an hour to find the bear. The helicopter and cage were provided by Norilsk Nickel.

Upon examination, it turned out that the bear had a damaged fang. This could have been the reason for her going out to people, since she could not hunt normally. It was impossible to return the weakened predator to its natural environment in this state – this would pose a danger to the bear and people.
