Krasnoyarsk residents were told how to make solar panels work in cloudy weather and snow

Krasnoyarsk residents were told that solar panels can work effectively even in cloudy weather and during snowfalls.
Winter is traditionally considered the “weak season” for solar power plants (SES). Short daylight hours, dense clouds and snow create the feeling that the panels are practically useless during this period. But, as practice shows, even in the northern regions in winter, with a competent approach, the system can stably generate electricity.
The main reason for the drop in generation in winter is not the cold. Modern photomodules, on the contrary, feel better at low temperatures: the efficiency of silicon panels increases as they cool. The problem is deficiency of solar radiation. But with proper design of the system, the lack of direct rays can be partially compensated for by diffused light and reflection from the snow.
In order for a solar power plant to operate efficiently in winter, the angle of inclination must be optimized. This will increase the incidence of low winter sun on the surface of the module and accelerate the natural melting of snow, thereby reducing the downtime of the system after precipitation. In some cases, seasonal adjustment of the angle gives an increase in output of up to 20-30% compared to a fixed “summer” position.

“Snow is not a death sentence for the SES, if it is not turned into a constant loss factor. In practice, simple solutions work: installing panels at a steeper angle; use of modules with smooth glass and anti-reflective coating; minimal manual maintenance after heavy snowfalls. It is important to understand that regular cleaning is not always required: often it is enough to wait for a sunny window for the panels to warm up and the snow to melt off on their own,” says the Technoline company.
Also in winter, the role of electronics increases. Modern inverters are able to operate efficiently in low light conditions, extracting maximum energy from a weak stream of photons. Intelligent automation allows you to correctly start the system at low temperatures, manage the priorities of energy consumption and storage, and also minimize losses during unstable generation. In conjunction with a battery storage system, the solar power plant turns into a predictable source of energy even on cloudy weeks.
“Winter operation is the best indicator of how well a solar power plant is designed. If the system continues to operate and makes a significant contribution to the energy balance of a home or business, then the calculations were performed correctly. As a result, winter ceases to be a “dead season” and becomes a period when solar power plants prove their technological maturity and real economic value,” the company notes.
