Residents in the north of the capital demand a metro and real transport solutions to Bucharest

Residents and people transiting the northern area of Ilfov county — especially Voluntari, Tunari, Dimieni, Cosmopolis, Balotești and neighboring towns — report major mobility problems and the lack of fast, high-capacity public transport solutions.

Currently, traveling to Bucharest, including the city center and the main business hubs, can take a long time. The difficult access to the existing metro stations and the absence of a direct connection to the network leads many to use their personal car, generating heavy traffic, lost daily time and a decrease in the quality of life for those who live or work in this area.
Construction sites for the metro to Otopeni Airport make the situation worse: the journey that normally takes 15–20 minutes can now exceed an hour. Some passengers recount exhausting experiences: “14 kilometers in two and a half hours”says a commuter, while a young woman adds: “It's my fault, I had to leave three hours before the deadline.” Tens of thousands of drivers who commute daily on the DN1 have to adapt to diverted traffic and unclear route changes, which often cause accidents.
To escape these difficulties, some locals choose to move to Bucharest. “We had a choice between commuting over an hour round trip or moving to the city and avoiding the traffic. Many neighbors wake their children up at 5:30 to get to school on time“, says a woman who chose to relocate from Corbeanca.
In this context, the residents of the north of Ilfov are asking the authorities for concrete measures regarding the metro and public transport:
- the inclusion of the northern area in the development plans of the subway network and the updating of the necessary studies (routes, scenarios, cost estimates);
- prioritizing investments that ensure fast connections between the north of Ilfov and Bucharest;
- improving access to existing stations such as Pipera through park&ride solutions, safe pedestrian links and integration with local transport;
- publishing a clear timetable with milestones, funding and responsibilities, as well as regular updates on work progress.
The petition can be found HERE.
Through this initiative, the residents hope to draw the attention of the authorities to a real and urgent need for mobility in the north of Ilfov, asking for coordination between institutions and transparent and fair public communication.
Those interested in supporting the initiative are invited to sign and distribute the petition in their communities to demonstrate that the issue affects thousands of people who live and work in this area.
