Ear plugs fly out without cotton swabs: I do homemade rinses – safe for eardrums

Discomfort in the ear canal can appear suddenly and is most often caused by a buildup of earwax. Attempting to remove the plug with inappropriate objects can push the wax deeper, injure the eardrum, or cause inflammation.

Why do ear plugs appear?

Sulfur is not dirt, but a protective secretion that moisturizes the ear canal and traps dust. Traffic jams are formed when there is hypersecretion, a narrow or tortuous ear canal. The problem also arises when you frequently use cotton swabs, which compact wax, while wearing earbuds or hearing aids.

There are simple methods to safely remove ear wax buildup, but these are only suitable for soft wax plugs and when there is no pain, discharge or perforation of the eardrum.

For prevention, you can use a safe and effective method of washing with hydrogen peroxide, approved by doctors.

How to rinse your ear at home

  1. Tilt your head to the side so that the affected ear is on top.
  2. Place 3-5 drops of warm hydrogen peroxide into the ear canal. You will hear a characteristic hissing sound – this is normal.
  3. Stay in this position for 5-10 minutes. The peroxide will soften and dissolve the cork.
  4. Tilt your head in the opposite direction over the napkin to allow the liquid to drain out.
  5. Gently blot the ear with cotton wool or gauze. Don't go inside.
  6. If necessary, repeat the procedure 1-2 times a day for 3-5 days.

The softened plug should come out on its own. To completely wash out a dense plug, the help of a doctor is required.

After 3-5 days of instillation, take a warm shower. Direct a gentle stream of water toward the wall of the ear canal, but not directly into the ear. Often the cork is washed out naturally. After showering, dry your ear thoroughly.

What not to do

  • Use cotton swabs, knitting needles, tweezers.
  • Try ear candles; this method is considered dangerous and ineffective.
  • Rinsing the ear under strong pressure can damage the eardrum.
  • Try to remove the plug if there is pain, discharge, tinnitus or hearing loss.

When you urgently need to contact an ENT specialist

If after 5 days of procedures there is no relief or if the following symptoms appear: severe pain, a feeling of fullness in the ear, discharge, persistent hearing loss, noise, ringing, dizziness, nausea or fever.

The doctor will quickly, safely and painlessly remove the plug using special rinsing or instruments under visual control.

Take care of your ears, use safe methods and don't hesitate to contact a professional.
