European Council conclusions. Nicușor Dan: “Solidarity with Denmark and Greenland”. Where there was no consensus

President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday, January 22, that the European Union reaffirmed its solidarity with Denmark and Greenland and, together with NATO, intends to invest in the defense of the Arctic zone.

“There were four important topics in this general discussion. Denmark – Greenland, tariffs, Ukraine, Gaza and the Board of Peace. On the subject of Denmark-Greenlandthe unanimous conclusion was of solidarity with Denmark and Greenland and the intention of the European Union, in coordination with NATO, to invest in the defense of the Arctic zone”, said the head of state.

Nicusor Dan added that, as far as tariffs are concerned, the de-escalation in the public statements by the two sides was welcomed.

“Consequently, in the European Parliament, the continuation of debates for the implementation of what was negotiated in July 2025.

As you know, these rebalancing tariffs of the European Union against imports from the United States, which are suspended, and the suspension was set to expire on February 6, 2026, a six-month extension of that suspension.” announced the president.

Nicușor Dan stated that, regarding Ukraine, the continuation of support and the elaboration of military plans related to security guarantees were discussed.

In the case of Gaza, there was a lack of consensus, but most of the participants believed that Europe must get involved in the peace process and negotiate with the US within the framework of the coalition, in accordance with international commitments.

Nicusor Dan explains why “teleleu” did not go to Davos

Regarding the absence from Davos, President Nicușor Dan explained that his advisor's statement that “television does not go to Davos” was taken out of context. He emphasized that Romania's international visits must be strategic and constructive, not just for form or image. Nicușor Dan specified that he regularly meets European leaders and that, before participating in international forums such as Davos, Romania must have clear strategies prepared for economic and diplomatic partnerships, noting the lack of such strategies in the Caspian area in recent decades. He also reminded that Romanians voted in May 2025 for change and concrete actions, not symbolic gestures.

“Beyond this word that public opinion has rediscovered, I want to start with a philosophical remark. I believe that the Romanians, in May 2025, voted for a change. I mean, they said we don't like how it was until now, we want to do it differently. To do otherwise, in my opinion, is to stop doing things of form“, the president said.

Nicusor Dan showed that on February 12 there will be an extraordinary European Council, in Maastricht, on competitiveness.
