The Arboretum of the Forest Institute in Krasnoyarsk Academgorodok was included in the list of botanical gardens, dendrological parks and natural monuments of federal significance. The corresponding order appeared on the website of the Russian government.
In essence, this means that now the arboretum in Krasnoyarsk is a specially protected natural area and is not subject to development. The order puts an end to disputes regarding the future fate of the object.
Disputes regarding land in Akademgorodok have been going on for more than 10 years. It all started back in 2015, when the arboretum, due to an alleged technical error, fell into the zone of possible development. Later it became known that the housing cooperative “Akademik Zhukov” planned to build a house there for scientists. Then the activists were able to defend the site and the work was stopped.
Already in 2021, the arboretum received regional protection status. However, in 2023, the situation became noticeably more complicated, as employees of the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center of the SB RAS became involved in the case. Scientists wanted to deprive the arboretum of its protected status, citing the need to use the object for research. But their idea was not crowned with success.
According to the Ministry of Ecology of the region, there are currently 648 specimens of trees growing in the arboretum of the Forest Institute, some of them are unique. You can also find rare plant species listed in the region’s Red Book.
Let us note that, in addition to the arboretum, the botanical garden of Siberian Federal University also received federal status in Krasnoyarsk.
