Iraq announced on Sunday the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces from bases throughout the Iraqi territory, with the exception of the autonomous Kurdistan region in the north, reports AFP, taken over by Agerpres.
All the respective military objectives come under the total control of the Iraqi security forces, the military committee that oversees the end of the coalition mission announced.
Most foreign forces had withdrawn from Iraq under a 2024 agreement between Baghdad and Washington that called for the end of the mission in Iraq by the end of 2025 and the end of the mission in Kurdistan by September 2026. Only military advisers remained in Iraq.
American and allied forces have been deployed in Iraq and Syria since 2014 to fight the Islamic State group, which had proclaimed a “caliphate” on part of the territories of the two countries. Muslim fundamentalists were defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, but they continue to operate through clandestine cells.
The military committee stated that the coordination with the international coalition will continue for the complete elimination of the presence of the Islamic State in Syria; the coalition provides cross-border logistical support for operations in Syria from the air base in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan.
