“Each member state will serve for a period of not more than three years from the entry into force of this charter, as renewable by the President,” reads the draft charter for the Gaza Peace Council, cited by Bloomberg.
“The three-year membership period does not apply to member states that pay at least USD 1 billion to the Peace Council within the first year after the entry into force of the Charter. – the agency further quotes.
According to information obtained by Bloomberg, the document is intended to describe the council as “an international organization whose purpose is to promote stability, restore reliable and lawful governance, and ensure lasting peace in areas affected by or at risk of conflict.” The consent of three “member states” is required to create the Peace Council, the agency adds.
In turn, according to reports from the Financial Times, which refers to the words of American officials, The Peace Council is to be perceived by the US administration as a “potential substitute for the UN“(…) a kind of parallel, unofficial body dealing with conflicts also outside Gaza.”
The establishment of the Peace Council is intended to be an element of the implementation of the second phase of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Leaders from over 60 countries were invited to serve on the council.
