It is necessary to normalize the financing of Ukrzaliznytsia from the state budget if we want a strong economy and defense.
As stated by the Federation of Employers of Ukraine, UZ loses more than UAH 20 billion annually due to unprofitability of passenger transportation and maintenance of infrastructure necessary for the army.
Support in the amount of UAH 8 billion, which the government is already planning, is the right step. But “one-time” decisions on the allocation of funds will not save the situation – a stable approach is needed, which will be enshrined in the Memorandum between the government and the UZ.
“Maintaining the railway is not an expense, but an investment in defense capability, exports and internal stability. The memorandum will allow UZ to restructure debts, plan repairs and purchases, as well as maintain the stability of logistics. It will become an “insurance policy” for the entire economy in wartime and a signal for international partners,” the FRU says.
