On Thursday, President Nicușor Dan conveyed to the foreign ambassadors from Bucharest what he proposes to do to expand the relationship with the United States and explained what the defining lines of the partnership will be.

At the first annual meeting with the heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Bucharest, which he hosted as president, Nicușor Dan spoke to them about the partnership between Romania and the USA.

“The Strategic Partnership with the United States will continue to be a fundamental line of action of our foreign policy in 2026,” the head of state said.

President Dan said that Romania understands its strategic role in the Black Sea and externally, “will intelligently identify projects that can bring added value to this partnership”.

Economic projects at the center of the discussion about the United States

Nicușor Dan stated that in order to expand and adapt the strategic partnership, he will propose a series of economic projects:

“We will propose to the United States a consistent agenda of mutually beneficial economic projects that complement our important security and defense cooperation and strengthen the foundation of our relationship,” he explained.

In addition, the president emphasized that the relationship between Romania and the USA “will have several defining lines: defense, energy security, rare raw materials and frontier technologies”.

When the visit to the Oval Office might take place

At the beginning of October, the Minister of Foreign Affairs was received in Washington by the head of American diplomacy, Marco Rubio. At that meeting, the two also discussed the meeting between President Nicușor Dan and Donald Trump.

“Yes, we also discussed the meeting of the presidents and here we are aligned regarding the possibility of having it in the first quarter of the following year”, said Țoiu at the end of the meeting.

Regarding the visit to the USA, Nicușor Dan stated on November 2, 2025, that the “big stake” will be the economic component.

“The most important thing in the future relationship between Romania and the United States is a much, much increased economic presence of American companies in Romania. That is the big stake of the visit to the United States and, therefore, it must be prepared from an economic point of view very well”, explained the president at the time.

The presidential adviser for foreign policy and national security, Marius Lazurca, said at the end of November that the head of state decided to create a working group to prepare his visit to the USA.

Lazurca said then that Nicușor Dan is “the active leader of this group” – “he did not delegate the preparation activities for this visit to your subordinates, but is directly in charge of the preparation of this visit”.

He affirmed that there are “several mandatory dimensions” in Nicușor Dan's foreign visits: “the political dimension, with a theme of great interest for Romania, namely what we put on the agenda of the political dialogue so that Romania comes out on top”, and the economic dimension, “absolutely fundamental”.
