“We had a very good conversation with US President Donald Trump. We talked about a variety of topics, including (maintaining) security while respecting our sovereignty, curbing drug smuggling, as well as trade and investment,” Sheinbaum wrote on the X platform.

At the press conference, the president was asked whether a US military intervention in Mexico had been ruled out after her conversation with Trump. – Yes, Sheinbaum replied, quoted by Mexican media, including the daily El Universal.

The Mexican leader explained that Trump proposed sending US armed forces to her country to help fight drug cartels. – This option is not on the table, but we continue to cooperate while respecting our sovereignty – she said.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio talked on Sunday with Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente about “the need for closer cooperation in the fight against Mexican narco-terrorist gangs and to block the smuggling of fentanyl and firearms into the US,” the Department of State reported.

Trump said last week on Fox News that Mexico is in fact run by drug cartels. He suggested that in the fight against these groups, the US could attack targets on Mexican territory.

United States forces carried out strikes on January 3 against targets in Caracas and several other cities in Venezuela. During the operation, the country's leader, Nicolas Maduro, was captured, transported to the United States and put on trial there, accused by the American prosecutor's office of, among others, about “narco-terrorism conspiracy”.
