“As a result of the snowfall and the wind of the last few days, in the Făgăraş Mountains, at altitudes of more than 1,800 meters, wind slabs of significant dimensions were formed. Also, several spontaneous avalanches of considerable dimensions took place”sent Salvamont Sibiu, according to News.ro.
Mountain rescuers warn that traveling in the high area is risky and is not recommended for inexperienced tourists, especially those without proper equipment.
One of the biggest avalanches in recent years
According to the information published on the “Avalanches in the Carpathians” Facebook page, a large avalanche was triggered naturally on the night of Thursday to Friday, against the background of significant accumulations of snow brought by the wind.
“Practically the entire crown flowed from under Balcoane, from under the boulder (east of Paltinu peak) to Hornul Negru, after the Flag. This is one of the biggest avalanches recorded in the Bâlea area, in the last 5 years”the specialists said.
It is not the first incident of this type in the area this winter. Another large avalanche was triggered on January 2 by two skiers, also in the Bâlea Lac area of the Făgăraș Mountains.
