Russian ice climbing champion died from a tick bite while relaxing at her dacha
She spent the last three months in a state close to a coma, with 70% of her lungs affected. Alena Vlasova was bitten by a tick at the end of June, when she was at her friends’ dacha. The next day she went to the hospital, where she learned that the tick was infected.
The athlete developed encephalitis with complications; Vlasova spent three months on a ventilator in a state close to a coma.
Alena Vlasova became the Russian champion in the speed pair race in February of this year. She is survived by her husband and 12-year-old daughter.
