The wrecked Ursa Major may have been heavily overloaded. The ship was carrying non-standard oversized cargo – port cranes weighing 380 tons each and hatch covers for new icebreakers weighing 45 tons.
Everything was loaded on board using the ship's own cranes. Each lifting capacity is 350 tons; two lifts had to lift the port cranes at the same time. Presumably, due to its oversize, the ship sank after 12 days of travel.
The ship was supposed to arrive in Vladivostok on January 22.
