Frederiksen recalled that Denmark, and therefore Greenland, is a NATO member and is covered by the Alliance's security guarantees. “We already have a defense agreement between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States, which gives the US broad access to Greenland, and we have invested significant resources in Arctic security,” she noted.

In an interview for The Atlantic on Sunday, Trump referred to concerns that after carrying out his threats against Venezuela, he would also follow through on his repeated announcements about joining the island to the US. The magazine's journalist asked him about the words of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who noted on Saturday that the attack on Venezuela shows that “if [Trump] says he will do something, these are not empty words.

The US president replied that it was up to others to interpret these words. — I really don't know. Marco complimented me very much yesterday. You know, I wasn't referring to Greenland at the time. At the end of December, the American president appointed Jeff Landry as the US special envoy for Greenland. The politician wrote on social media that his task would be to “incorporate Greenland into the USA.”

Concerns about the future of Greenland were stoked on Saturday by Katie Miller, the wife of key Trump adviser Stephen Miller. A former official of Elon Musk's DOGE team posted on the website a map of Greenland colored in the colors of the American flag with the note “coming soon”. The entry was reacted to by, among others: Danish ambassador to the US Jesper Moeller Soerensen, who emphasized that he expected full respect for the territorial integrity of his country.
