More than 700 Romanians needed an ambulance on New Year's Eve, including for accidents with firecrackers and excesses of alcohol

Romanians turned on the phone lines on New Year's Eve, and not only to call their relatives or friends, but also to request the intervention of doctors. During New Year's parties, many people overeat or drink too much alcohol, ending up in hospital emergency rooms.

Only in Bucharest and Ilfov, 702 people needed medical care, of which 571 had red or yellow code emergencies, according to Alis Grasu, manager of the Bucharest-Ilfov Ambulance Service.

“The Ambulance was requested for the entire range of request reasons, as in the usual periods: from road accidents, allergies, thermal burns, vascular accidents, falls, fever, myocardial infarction… So, the entire range of request reasons. But if we are to link to this period of the night between years, we can talk, for example, about five firecracker accidents. All these people arrived at the hospital – all of them are male, aged between 30 and 61 years old. They have burns on their hands, face and eyes…”, said Alis Grasu for Digi24.

The Ambulance Manager pointed out that although these pyrotechnic materials are prohibited by law, “there are still people who do not take into account the regulations in force and make use of these firecrackers, especially at the end of the year”.

Also, 47 people required the intervention of the Rescue after consuming too much alcohol. Other special cases included five births, one of which took place at home, assisted by Ambulance crews.

“Everything is fine. We managed to get through this night as well. During this period, the entire staff of the Bucharest-Ilfov Ambulance Service is on duty. There are no vacations, there are no days off, there are no recoveries”, Alis Grasu also specified.
