First in private medicine: MedLife introduces vNOTES, the newest standard in minimally invasive gynecological surgery

MedLife announces the realization, for the first time in private medicine in Romania, of a gynecological oncological intervention using the vNOTES (Video-assisted Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) technique, considered the newest standard in minimally invasive gynecological surgery, with significant benefits for patients with high operative risk. The intervention marks an important step in expanding access to advanced surgical solutions for complex cases, under increased safety conditions.

The intervention took place at the MedLife Polisano Hospital in Sibiu and was performed on a 78-year-old patient, diagnosed with uterine cancer, which associated obesity and a complex cardiac pathology. These comorbidities would have involved a significant anesthetic-surgical risk in the case of a classical, conventional laparoscopic or robotic intervention. Following an interdisciplinary evaluation, the medical team decided to use the vNOTES technique, a state-of-the-art surgical solution, specifically adapted to this type of patient.

The vNOTES technique allows gynecological interventions to be performed through a transvaginal laparoscopic approach, using only natural openings, without abdominal incisions and without scars. This approach contributes to the significant reduction of surgical trauma and anesthetic risk, and is also associated with a much accelerated postoperative recovery. Although it is a technically difficult intervention, the operation proceeded without complications and the postoperative evolution was remarkable.

By eliminating abdominal incisions, the vNOTES technique offers clear and quantifiable advantages for the patient: minimal postoperative pain, reduced risk of anesthetic complications, decreased risk of infections and eventrations, and a significantly shorter hospital stay. The rapid recovery and early mobilization make this technique particularly suitable for patients with a high degree of obesity and those with associated cardiac conditions, categories traditionally considered high risk for standard surgery.

In this case, the patient mobilized only 12 hours after the intervention, and at 24 hours she was fully recovered, without requiring anti-algesic medication, confirming the concrete clinical benefits of applying this new surgical standard in gynecological oncology.

“The vNOTES technique was not a comfort option, but an essential medical solution, which allowed us to surgically treat a gynecological cancer in a patient with a high anesthetic-surgical risk. Without this type of approach, the intervention would have been much more difficult to carry out safely”, said Cristian Tibea, gynecological oncologist, coordinator of the medical team involved in this case.

Through this achievement, MedLife reconfirms its position as a pioneer in the adoption of the latest medical standards and in the integration of advanced surgical technologies in clinical practice in the private system, with a direct impact on patient safety and the quality of the medical act.
